Meet Alexandra Michler Kopelman from Vogue
Allie, biggest congratulations on your pregnancy. You are absolutely glowing. How has it been so far?
Thank you so much. I feel so fortunate to have felt really good throughout my pregnancy. Of course there are surprises as you learn your body as it changes, but I feel tremdously grateful to have felt mostly healthy and energetic.
You must be very busy juggling work at Vogue as well as growing a human. How has navigating that balance been?
I think whenever a woman is pregnant, there is a lot to balance between her changing body, changing hormones, and shifting priorities- no matter what your work circumstances are! I have actually felt very focused having more on my plate- it's helped me stay on task.
Being a part of the Vogue family must give you overwhelming access to fashion. Who are some of your favorite designers to wear?
It is so hard to choose, but that is the beauty of fashion! There is always someone interesting and new on the horizon to mix into your wardrobe. Lately, I have been wearing a lot of Toteme, Khaite, House of Aama, and La Ligne- they all make easy, everyday pieces.
How would you describe your style?
Classic and feminine. I get a bit more boho in the summer.
At Bumpsuit we are all too familiar with the difficulty of dressing a growing baby bump. How would you say your style has changed during your pregnancy?
Normally, I relish in the opportunity to wake up every day and put together a new outfit- it is what inspires me and gives me a hit of serotonin in the morning! But during my pregnancy, I have been the queen of the re-wear. I circulate the same 5 outfits day in and day out. I wore the black Bumpsuit turtleneck dress to basically every evening event I had this winter....black tie, cocktail, even daytime. I loved having a uniform!
We had the pleasure of shooting you and your beautiful baby bump on location in the Hamptons recently for our upcoming linen and cozy rib collection. What pieces were your favorite?
I had so much fun being on the other side of the camera! I really loved all of the linen pieces. They were so easy, elegant, and lightweight- exactly what you want to be wearing when you are pregnant during summertime. I felt put together but at ease.
What other Bumpsuit styles do you love and what is your favorite way to wear them?
I mentioned the black turtleneck dress which was truly my favorite outfit during pregnancy...it gave shape in the right places, but gave my bump room to breathe! I also love the jumpsuit. It's so soft- it's the perfect travel outfit. I often wore this with an oversize sweater and riding boots.
Do you have any tips for other expecting mamas on how best to dress a bump?
Figure out what feels best on you/ most comfortable and lean into that. I realized I still loved wearing dresses, as they would not constrict my midsection, so I found pieces that worked for my changing body. Once you designate what works and what feels good, it makes it a lot easier to get dressed.
What are your top five pregnancy must haves?
1.) Supportive partner/ family/ girlfriends to ask their advice!
2.) Earth Mama belly butter
3.) Non toxic bath/hair products. I've loved the Honest Company deep hydration cream and Innersense shampoo/conditioner. Also Zoya nail polish.
4.) Bumpsuit turtleneck dress 5. Van Leeuwen cookies & cream ice cream.
Pregnancy and birth is one of the most spiritual and beautiful pilgrimages a woman can take. But it is often one of the most challenging and can bring a lot to the surface. Is there anything you’ve been surprised to learn about yourself over the last nine months?
How women are really built for this. Your body just knows what to do, and kicks into survival mode. I can't help but marvel at the fact that women's bodies have programming to just know to go on autopilot, tell your brain what it needs, and create a human.
Finally, What are you most looking forward to about becoming a mother?
I am looking forward to so much, but I am really excited for some quiet time this summer. We will be going to Nantucket after the baby is born to spend time with both our families. I can't wait to hunker down and just enjoy these early days as a family.
